Komodo Dive Sites (3)
The Dive Sites of Komodo offers pretty much every imaginable type of diving; sea mounts with strong currents, patrolled by sharks and trevallies or calm reefs teeming with some of the richest variety in marine life you can find anywhere in the world.
There are dozens of dive sites in the Komodo National Park, but we pick and choose the dive sites on each trip to best suit the needs and passions of our guests. During the dry season, most of the diving is concentrated around the northern side of the islands of Komodo and Rinca and the dozens of small islands and islets scattered around the area.
Another Great site in the Komodo National Park. This dive site lies close to Castle Rock and is a bit easier to find, as the tip of the pinnacle just breaks the surface at low tide (versus the submerged pinnacle of Castle rock). The waters in this area are very clear and there is a fine variety of schooling fish, like fusiliers, sweetlips and triggerfish. If you are lucky, you might see one or two massive napoleon wrasse passing by.
As with almost all Komodo dive sites, we visit this site when the tides and conditions are suitable - please be advised the sites are chosen at the discretion of the dive guides. For this reason , Crytal Rock is not included on all Komodo Dive tours.
Castle Rock
A great dive site one of the best in the world. Once you have dived it, you will agree. This underwater pinnacle attracts lots of pelagics; grey reefsharks, white tips, huge trevally’s and the odd eagle ray passing by. The top of the pinnacle is a few meters under the surface and a good place to finish the dive, since you can find shelter for the current. Marine life is great at each depth, but it is at the base of the pinnacle where you will find the sharks cruising around.
This site, like almost all site located in the deep channel between Komodo and Rinca islands can have some fierce currents. For this reason, this site is restricted to the most experienced divers and limited to certain conditions. Snorkeling is not allowed and no one with less than 50 dives is permitted. We only visit this site a few times a month, so please don't expect it on the itinerary.
This small seamount sits right in the middle between Komodo and Tatawa Islands and therefore gets its fair share of water movement. The top of the rock sticks out of the water and you can either dive the northern or the southern side, depending on the current flow. This is one of the most exciting divesites in the area and once you go down, you are likely to be greeted by vast schools of reeffish, turtles and whitetip reefsharks. Look closely between the corals and rocks and you might find some nudibranches like the beautiful Nembrotha Purpureolineata
This dive site is reserved for experienced divers only. As it is located in the deep channel, this can have quite strong currents and poses many risks to the those that do not know how to read that currents. Please only use an experienced dive center with fully trained guides.
